Now to continue with  this and complicate it a little more as we will talk about giving endings to nouns which end in a k and have a vowel before the k.

Ok to give you an idea why this is the next lesson, for these words the k needs to change to ğ

an example would be the word for kitchen mutfak, lets add the  ending e to it

Mutfağa git!  Go to the kitchen!

We will stop here and not go into depth on these changes in consonants. We feel to be aware of the changes is enough and of course we will come up against these type of changes in future lessons.

Notes

Two words you will hear a lot are abi and abla (they mean big brother - abi and big sister - abla) but you use them as a friendly and respectful way of addressing people older than yourself.

Now for something that may seem a little strange, but if you think about it, we may do the same in English.

Refuse something by saying thank you.

In Turkish you do this by saying teşekkür ederim.

When at a dinner table so as not to make a mistake and find yourself without the dish you was looking forward use the word lütfen when you wish to accept something.

Something else you may hear a lot is ben de.  The word de or da translates to - to or also, so ben de means - me to.  Be careful not to mix it up with the ending -de and -da , which you have already learnt, means in, on or at.

Try and make a picture in your mind of this situation

Janet and John, a very happily married couple (family) are at home for the evening and are sitting at the kitchen table.  On the Wall is a picture of their wedding (just the two of them).  Their rather large and naughty cat has sat himself on the table beside them.  John trying to decide if he should open a bottle of wine, glances at the bookshelf where there are many cookbooks and a bottle of red wine.

Now you have a picture of the situation in your mind, answer these questions.  Remember not to use just the stem word but to add the correct endings.

Bu aile mutlu mu?

Kaç kisi var?

Kedi nerede?

Şarap nerede?

Resimde kim var?

Rafta ne var?

Some of the words you will need to know in order to answer these questions

Raf    Shelf,

Kedi    Cat,

Aile   Family,

Resmin    Picture, and a reminder that the word  for and is ve
