Commands
In Turkish there a three different ways of telling someone what to do.
The familiar way is just to use the word (stem word) for example
Gel! Come!
For a formal command you add the ending -in to the familiar version.
This version uses the i type vowel harmony.
Example
Gelin!
The last version is a very formal way of commanding and this will be used in official notices and on warning signs. This version is made by adding the ending -iniz to the stem word.
Again this follows the i type vowel harmony.
Example
Geliniz!
Try this out with the new words and see how you get on, remember to follow the rules of vowel harmony.
Well OK so you now know how to tell someone to do something how about not to do something, this is also quite simple to do.
Take the stem word yap (do) and add the ending (me) that’s it.
Yapma! Don't do
The only difference this time is the rule of vowel harmony which follows the e type vowel harmony.
For formal negative commands you need to add in or iniz onto the informal command
Gelmeyin!
Yapmayınız!
Can you spot any other differences? The letter y has been added to act as a buffer between the two vowels that would otherwise have clashed.
Try all these commands out with some of the words you have learned and see how you get on.
