This and that

In English we have two words for this and that but in Turkish you will find three.

bu   şu and lastly o

bu         this

şu         that (for something nearby)

o          that (for something further away)

A good guide would be to say that bu if for something in the hand, şu for something on the other side of the room and o for something much further away.

Words for asking questions

who?                     kim?

what?                    ne?

where?                  nerede?

when (what time)   ne zaman?

how?                     nasıl?

how many?            kaç tane?

how much?            ne kadar?

a and the

Unlike English with  Turkish for the majority of  time you do not need to use words such as a or the.  Sound Strange?  It's not really; you will soon find that often these words are not really necessary.
